I am not able to upload files to my documents directory. When I try to upload a file i get the following error: "The Webserver does not have the necessary permissions to upload to the directory" I changed the permission settings to 777 and I still get the same error message.

We are running: MODx Revolution 2.0.8-pl

Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated.

      1. There are many ways to skin a cat. File uploads are possible in three different ways (FTP; CPanel; and MODx manager: create and/or copy and paste).

      2. Permissions are usually no issues, if you set all folders to 755, and all your files to 644. If you set them to 777, your hosting company will block many things, including file uploads, because they think they’re helping you.

      3. What you’ve got looks like a fairly simple ’permission’ issue. Let’s hope no other issue will kick in.

      4. You can’t and shouldn’t and try not to change anything to 777 (in your own interest and that of others, like your hosting company).

      5. Try the MODx version 2.0.7. I cannot seem to be able to find my original zipped copy of it, but I might be able to recreate it for you, and put it into a zipped file. Or, alternatively, ask around, right here and now. Someone will likely have it. Because definitely and positively I had more luck with 2.0.7. IMO 2.0.8. is a bit weird; something is wrong! I’ve uploaded and re-installed it four times already (!!!) on two (!!) different servers of two (!!) hosting companies, and neither of the 2.0.8 installations is good enough. For example, 2.0.8. still refuses to install ’simplesearch’. And 2.0.8. is still making my pages invisible. I sincerely hope you’re having a better luck. Because you will need luck!
        Best regards,
        Mike

A little more background information may be useful to help us troubleshoot.

How are you trying to do the uploads? Are you using an FTP client or the MODx file manager?

What are your other server settings?

Have you looked at your MODx error log?

We are using the MODX file uploader. seems that if i change the folder permissions to 777 I can upload but if I change to 755 I can’t I am able to us FTP to upload with no issues.

MODX is set to upload large files so that is not the issue.

I checked the logs and this is the error message I am seeing alot...not sure if it has anything to do with my issue:

            [2011-03-15 11:59:08] (ERROR @ /home/pleasant/public_html/core/xpdo/xpdo.class.php : 1884) PHP warning: json_encode() [<a href=’function.json-encode’>function.json-encode</a>]: recursion detected

Some servers require folders to be 777 to write to them, if that is what works change the permissions to 777, we have over 300 sites on one of our servers with no issues using 777 for folder permissions on the ones that require it.

There is also the possibility that you may not have the ownership to actually change permissions (which may be the case if you set 777 permissions and still don’t have write access).

How did you upload the original installation files? Through FTP, or your website control panel?

We actually had an older version of MODX and recently upgraded to the version we are running now. We setup using FTP.

This update was done because the site was hacked and we wanted to make sure we had the latest update.
