I need a bit of help. Am I on the right track? Want to update my MODx 2.07. How do I go from 2.0.7 to 2.0.8?
Step 1: In December I installed 2.0.7 manually (by downloading, unzipping, uploading, and then by accessing /setup/index.html).
Step 2: Can I do the update from the control panel of /manager/?
I can do the same for many plug-ins! But, as to the MODx, it seems I cannot do that!
Step 3: The recommended backups:
There are many who recommend the backups.
It’s lots of work, but it’s a good idea.
However, why do I get the idea that they’re unnecessary?
Because, even in the unlikely event the internet connection is terminated, my FTP Client will pick it up where it was left off.
And because, let’s remember, this is a manual update process, where you have a total control over the whole process.
A) The /.htaccess file seems important.
B) The /core/cache/config.cache.txt file also looks important.
C) The MySQL DB is extremely important. But how do you back it up? Through the Janitor plug-in? Or is there an easier way?
Maybe I should ask the customer service of my hosting company.
Step 4: Download, unzip, upload, and overwrite? The overwrite doesn’t seem to be the right thing to do a) because it’s manual, and b) because it’s irreversible.
Step 5: Accessing /setup/index.html and completing the installation process should be easy and routine.
Step 6: Removal of the /installer/ folder is probably not necessary, because these days MODx Rev 2.0.8. will do it for you.
NOTE: My environment is:
MODx Revolution 2.0.7.
Remotely located Unix servers,
Uploaded from Windows Vista
IE and Firefox

Q3: Why do I get the idea that the backups aren’t necessary?
Q4: But how do you back up the DB? Through the Janitor plug-in? Or is there an easier way?
Q5: Do you really have to overwrite the 2.07 files? It doesn’t seem to be the right thing to do.

Hello,
The process to update MODX Revolution for the time being is manual, in later releases they hope to offer a built in one click update.
In the mean time to update a Revolution install (at least advanced installs) the process is simple:
1. Backup the site (if something blows up you can recover from this)
2. Upload the core and setup folders overwriting any existing files (Except the config file!)
3. Run the setup
4. Login to the install and verify everything is working.
