Problems with my .htaccess and rewrite on dev. site :(

Hi

Using evo 1.05.

I’m already using nice urls, std. .htaccess that ships with modx. This is all fine.
I’m viewing a specific product on my dev site like this: http://www.url.com/cars/show-car?guid=75F5D9D4-26E0-45E1-B116-5AF37EAD6490

I tried several solutions to get it to work like this: http://www.url.com/cars/carname,75F5D9D4-26E0-45E1-B116-5AF37EAD6490 (or similar to have nice url instead og the guid param).

Can anybody help me out on this?

My last try was;
RewriteRule ^show-car/([a-zA-Z0-9_-]+),$ show-car?guid=$1

I think you are wasting your time on this one. I mean is there really much of a difference in these urls:

http://www.url.com/cars/show-car?guid=75F5D9D4-26E0-45E1-B116-5AF37EAD6490
http://www.url.com/cars/carname,75F5D9D4-26E0-45E1-B116-5AF37EAD6490

People are not going to be typing them either way

People are not going to be typing them in, and Google is not going to be giving you any love either

Something like www.url.com/cars/make-model-year-engine is going to be much more useful to both your visitors and search engines.

What’s your setup? From the looks of things you have your products listed in a custom db - is there a field (or several) you can use to build more descriptive urls?

Yes it’s a custom table (some) in modx db.
I have a descriptive (unique) name that could be like http://www.url.com/cars/carname (or productname).
But how can this be translated into the guid param to look it up?

I’m not really an expert on this kind of thing, but where are you getting the long ’guid=75F5D9D4...’ string from?

If the car names are unique, could you build your urls using those instead of the guid parameters? Or tack them on the end as a second parameter which you could use to build the friendly url?

This might be a good way to do it

Let me know how it goes as this is something I will be looking to do myself soon anyway.

And... hoping someone who has done this before will chime in about now

This issue can be easilt fixed..if I understand what your trying to do correctly.
U have a seperate DB table of cars, and the gu_id is like the ID that identifies a car?

If you add this as a TV, and create a container of "car" resources, you can link your modx resources to your custom table.
Then once a user hits:
http://yourdomain.com/cars/big-red-super-car, your page knows its id as its in a TV.
Now pull that record and display in a custom snippet, this help?
