I’m trying to get my head around the whole Manager/Web roles and permissions and to be honest - it is giving me a headache.

    What I want to do:

    - Create a page
    - Give access to a user (I don’t know whether it should be manager or web user, though). I want the user to be able to use the wonderfully handy QuickManager to edit the page content...only the *content* area.
    - have the roles defined as..."news", "staff directory","pr", etc., which I could then assign the users to. I want all to be able to use the QuickManager, and need to keep them defined as to what "pages" they can edit the content for. "news" and "pr" handled by user A, while "staff" and "news" can be done by user B (but not access to "pr").

I’ve found the Wiki page on doc. permissions (http://wiki.modxcms.com/index.php/Document_Access_Permissions), but it doesn’t clarify manager/web roles well. Also, it it for an old version?

    Thanks

Agreed...thank you. It’s very helpful to understand the process - do still wish there was a GOOD explanation to what the diff. between Web and Manager users are.

Manager users are any users who sign on by going to yoursite.com/manager and work in the MODx Manager (back end). Web users include everyone else. They visit the front end of the site and log in through a form there. The main use of Manager permissions is to control which documents Manager Users can edit. The main use of Web Permissions is to control which documents front-end users can see when they visit the site.

In MODx Revolution, the distinction doesn’t exist. There are just users.

I’ve updated the Permissions page at Bob’s Guides to try to address your comment. Thanks for the feedback. smiley

Thanks Bob. Absolutely great guide site you have. Thank you for the explanation. Really helps. So for clients I can be the manager, and set them up as web users, correct? Also, are web users able to use the QuickManager/Quickedit?

Yes, web users can use QM/QE. I sometimes teach clients how to use the Manager and make them Manager Users who can only access the documents they need to edit. With especially naive clients, I make them Web Users and have them use QM/QE, Newspublisher, or some custom front-end stuff.
