I am currently running ModX Evo on a Godaddy shared server that does not support compression via an Apache module. I can’t afford the $30 a month for a virtual dedicated server. On the fly PHP compression is also not an option. I only need a few javascript files compressed before being sent to the user’s browser and they are static. I am looking for a bit of PHP (or whatever you may suggest) that will detect browser compatibility for the compressed file format and select between the compressed and uncompressed file to include. I have compressed all the code I can, cleaned the site’s code up and optimized images, but I will have to remove some rich content if I can’t get the load times down. Any suggestions?

GoDaddy’s environment while functional is not an ideal environment for running MODx, you may want to consider switching to another hosting provider, most other providers offer gzip support without the need for a VPS/VDS server.
If you provide a link to the site in question I will be happy to take a look and see what else can be done to speed things up. I suspect you will get a big boost in moving to a server with a local database as well.
If you want I can point you towards some better hosting options.
