    I’ve looked around modxcms.com and am unable to find a solution, actually its been quite a while of trying to figure this out.

    I’m trying to create a modx revo site in four languages. English, Chinese, Arabic, and Hebrew. This site will first be developed in English (main site) and will use subdomains to separate languages also using multiple contexts.

    I’ve tried adding the Chinese, Arabic, and Hebrew content through revo on my local xampp install but it always ends up as question marks "? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?". I’ve also tried it on my shared hosting provider and get the same effect when saving documents with non-latin language characters.

    I don’t have a solid understanding of mysql, but I’ve been able to read a bit about the issue, yet I’ve still not found a solution. huh

      I suspect your data tables are not encoded using UTF-8

        Mr. Thrash you’re right, I thought I had the db set as utf8. I’ll try it again thank you!

          I have found that if you create a table using the common CPanel domain control panel that you’ll have to go into your phpMyAdmin and use the "operations" tab to set the collation to utf-8 (I believe if you are using Hebrew with nikudot that utf8_bin is the proper collation set).

            Thanks for the tip Ms. Ottwell. Would it be recommended to convert existing latin1_swedish_ci to utf8 or would that cause problems? Also I’m using utf8_unicode, is that compatible with those languages?

              Converting existing content is not a trivial task.

                Hi.

                I just joined. And I must admit I am inspired by the freedom MODx seem to offer compared to the "big" CMS.

                But before committing I want to know of any issues making a site using Japanese and English, and keeping the door open for Chinese and Korean (and other Asian and Middle-Eastern languages).

                Are there any major issues that will come back to bite me on the back?
                Is it as simple as making sure the database has the right collation from the get-go?

                I guess I just need advice on whether to boldly go forth (and find technical solutions later), or find another CMS?

                Anyway, thanks in advance!

                  As long as your database is configured correctly you'll have no problems.

                      Hi! I also have the "??????????????" problem for chinese content, in spite of having my database set to utf-8. Here's what is set in ModX core/config.config.inc.php:

                      $database_type = 'mysql';
                      $database_server = 'db494638184.db.1and1.com';
                      $database_user = '##########';
                      $database_password = '###########';
                      $database_connection_charset = 'utf8';
                      $dbase = 'db494638184';
                      $table_prefix = 'modx_';

                      And in PhpMyAdmin I set:

                      MySQL charset: UTF-8 Unicode (utf8)
                      MySQL connection collation: utf8_unicode_ci

                      What is wrong in my configuration? Could anybody give me a hint?

                      Thanks and best regards
