    Hi,

We have been receiving parser errors in the modx system event viewer (see tables below). The first time I saw these errors I contacted the domain host and they explained they had had an issue with a DNS server therefore the MySQL server could not be contacted. These errors have began to re-occur (usually between 3 and 4am), I have contacted the domain host again and they suggested the errors are performance related although I’m not convinced. The host have provided new FTP details for another more powerfull server that I can test on, then migrate if the issue is resolved.

Currently we run modx 0.9.6.3 and the new server will be running Revolution 2.0.6. The old server will continue to be the production server until the new server install has been tested.

I am intending to copy the files and folders from the exisiting 0.9.6.3 server to the new Revolution server, then restore the existing database to a new database. Is copying the files and folders from a superseded software version to a new version on a different server acceptable i.e. going from 0.9.6.3 to Revolution installation on a different server?

I was intending to accomplish the above by performing the following steps based upon the ‘Moving your site to a new server’ guide http://rtfm.modx.com/display/revolution20/Moving+Your+Site+to+a+New+Server:

    • Backup existing FTP files/folders
    • Backup database using modx manager, selecting ‘all tables’ and selecting option ‘generate drop table statements’. Is this an acceptable method of backing up the database as I don’t have the privileges to backup using MySQL Administrator?
    • Ask domain host to create new database
    • Install modx revolution on new server
    • Turn off ‘FURLS’ in Revolution manager
    • Rename .htaccess to ht.access
    • Clear cache and settings
    • Copy FTP backed up files to new FTP
    • Restore database to new target database
    • Update config file
    • Update database
    • Update htaccess
    • Re-run setup script

Please advise if I am missing any required steps or if there are any issues with the upgrade?

    Many thanks

    Chris

Moving from Evo or pre-1.0 to Revo is a totally different matter. They are quite different, and you can’t just move the site like that.

I cant see any mention of the Provisioner supporting pre-1.0 installs?

The upgrade to a newer version of modx is not essential, I can install 0.9.6.3 on the new server if the version upgrade is going to be a nightmare. Our site is fairly basic and I only tend to make simple changes to the site. I will have a look at Revolution and see if the additional functionality is of use to us.

You should not be using an older version of MODx; there have been several major security updates since then.

Could first upgrade to 1.0.5-rc and then follow the links Susan posted to migrate.

Should get rid of that 0.9.6.3 anyway. tongue

I cannot see 1.0.5-rc on the download page or in the repository, is Evolution 1.05 from the download page OK?

                The plan is now to:

                Install 0.9.6.3 on new server
Move site to new server using http://rtfm.modx.com/display/revolution20/Moving+Your+Site+to+a+New+Server
                Test
Upgrade to 1.05 Evolution following http://rtfm.modx.com/display/Evo1/Upgrading?
                Test
Upgrade to Revolution MODx Revolution 2.0.7-pl using Provisioner suggested by Susan
                Test

1.0.5 is fine - it was released between my last post and your post to replace the release candidate.
