    hi everyone

the day has come and decided to move everything from localhost to the live server
in order to do this, i don’t want to miss anything which could ruin or slow down my work

i’m not an advanced programmer or server geek smiley but already managed a lot with MODx on my local server

I’m little bit confused how I should install MODx on my server or what should be the first steps.
Of course, I would clear the cache and sessions, backup my database and so on.
Shall I follow the "Moving Your Site to a New Server" guidelines or the Basic Installation guide and then overwrite with my files on my localhost and then configure the core config php file appropriately?

Should I upload through FTP the downloaded latest MODx package zipped file? Then extract it somehow on the server or extract it locally, then upload through FTP? First version would be optimal otherwise it would be probably too slow till all files would get uploaded.

So, I would appreciate if someone would recognise my problem and guide me through a little bit with some useful tips.

    Thanx in advance.

Yes, follow "Moving Your Site to a New Server", so move all your local files to the server, setup a database on your server and then upload your backed up database to the database using phpMyAdmin or similar. Adjust your config file’s db settings accordingly and then check all file permissions from the above mentioned guide (or the Basic Installation). Navigate to manager=>configuration on the live server and change the paths that would have originally referenced the local server to match the live server. Your site should fire up once you’ve done all this! Check .htaccess paths if you’ve prevously enabled friendly urls.
          Mostly harmless.

I’ve been trying to follow the WIKI instructions "moving the MODx site for hours!! What a mess. I am not a programmer, but it appears, even to my untrained eye that several steps are out of sequence and some refer to files and directories that do not exist in REVO.

I am developing locally on OSX in MAMP. Preparing to try to move this site again after 4 failed attempts.

I am meticulous about following instructions, by these are not easy to follow. It feels as if they were written for someone who does not need them. I made some comments on the WIKI about sequence, etc. Would love to see a more designer/ not developer version someday. >:(

May be some steps in the "Moving Your Site to a New Server" procedure sound strange because it uses some commands not familiar to designer (like tar, gunzip ecc.)
Anyway, as it is written there, it’s a "best practice suggested".

If it can help, this is how I did it last time:

              1. enable hidden files (so you should see also .htaccess) upload all the files to the new server, just make sure to upload "every" file
              2. import your database to you new server
              3. update the file core/config/config.inc.php as specified in the section "Updating your Config File"
If it can help you, my path to modx root was: /var/www/vhosts/MySite.it/httpdocs/
in another server it was: /web/htdocs/www.MySite.it/home/
actually it depends on your new server configuration, if you perform a clean installation you can see what MODx assigns to it.
              4. with PhpMyAdmin, or another tool you can use to edit your database, you should edit the only row you have in your workspace table (usually this table is called modx_workspaces and update the value "path" with the new path.
              5. if you want to enable Friendly URL you should edit also .htaccess, but first just make your site working smiley

Best to specify in future which version, Evo or Revo, you’re using when posting - I wrongly assumed you were using Evo.

there are already few who joined this discussion with some useful tips
I will post my steps as soon as I manage the move to my live server

thanx again for your support to this discussion
any tips, experiences are still welcome, I think this topic worth more discussions especially for those who are not so advanced in programming or server configuraion ....

I nearly went stir crazy trying to pick apart the documentation re: moving to live server. So i learned my lesson work on the live server from the start. if you can it’s better to develop on a live web server. you can hide everything your working on behind a "site not available" page (or under construction page) in system settings.

                    in revo;
go to system settings under system,
                    then search for "anavailable"
                    viola,
can custom design an "under construction" page too

For a while I used to work directly on the live server to avoid the moving process. I don’t find this is always practical though. I usually upload my entire site and then upload the new database. Next I upload the setup folder for the version of modx I’m using as if doing an update. Then I run the setup process, this usually updates the config and workspaces correctly. I’ve found this to be easier than doing it manually. Then I configure .htaccess and check if any packages need updating.

I’m not necessarily recommending this method but that’s just how I do it. When editing the config manually there’s more chance of a typo or entering an incorrect path.
