It’s pretty simple... download MODx, unzip it. Upload everything to your new website. Go to mysite.com/install in your browser. Follow the instructions in the installation program.
If you have ssh access, you can scp the zip package to your website and unzip it in place.
The only thing to consider is that you’ll need access to a MySQL database; the installer will create the database if the database user you give it has create permissions. If not, you’ll need to create the database first.
That said, Bluehost.com does have a very solid one-click MODx install using SimpleScripts (and it does upgrades).

SimpleScripts can be used on any hosting platform with FTP access and the ability to create databases I think. Both cPanel and Plesk also contain the hooks needed to support it as well.

I think it only exists on three hosting sites at present (Bluehost, and two others). I wish it were catching on faster, it seems much better than Fantastico.

I think the problem with it’s slow deployment among other hosting companies is the lack of scripts. Fastastico offers a host of other options and I believe it’s also cheaper. Personally I was sold after noticing my 4 favorite letters (MODx)...
I hope to see it offered on more hosts down the road.
