Can I install modx in a subfolder from the root and have it displayed on the root? Example:
have their be a folder in the root called modx (so the url would be www.xxxxxxx.com/modx) but have it displayed at www.xxxxxx.com?
I know wordpress and joomla have this capability, does modx?

Yes. In your .htaccess file, just add the subdirectory name to the RewriteBase rule:
Awesome thanks, I moved the modx set up from a windows local server to a linux production server and now I can not login to the manager section, any ideas? Also getting a parsing error on every page. Need to get this resolved ASAP

There may be some configurations you have to change. There should be some information about what to change in that topic. Let us know if you get stuck.
I'm learning more about MODx all the time and loving it.
