    Some progress. Was modifying obsolete copy of the Resource rather than current live one (forehead smack).

    The test web page I'm trying to put in SSL is forcing HTTPS now, but the page is returning 404. Turn SSL off for that page, it loads fine. Turn SSL on, 404.

    Any ideas? Could this be a permissions issue?

      Problem seems to be solved now, and it was a permissions issue. Got clue from this link:
      http://tech.surveypoint.com/enable-apache-rewrite-for-your-wordpress-or-modx-cms-site.html and added the clause:

      <Directory /var/www/modx/>
      AllowOverride All
      </Directory>

      to the default-ssl file in /etc/apache2/sites-available. The web page I want in SSL is now returning properly.

      Thought I'd post this here in case anyone else runs into this same issue.
