    Hi I am having a strange issue on my MODx Evo 1.0.4 install on my Dedicated Virtual Server over at Media Temple.

    I had my site, onuraybar.com on their Grid Service and moved it over to my dv and all went well for the most part. The only problem that I am having is that when I try to use the file manager to edit or upload documents I get the following: Upload feature inhibited - make sure uploads are supported and the directory is writable for PHP.

    I checked to make sure that I followed the instructions here: http://wiki.modxcms.com/index.php/Installation_Guide and everything is correct but I feel like I am missing something at the server level because everything was fine on the gs service. I could upload and edit files right in the CMS.

    If anyone has experience with installing Evo on Media Temple dv services I would appreciate any advice. I’m just stumped, it seems like there is something simple that I am overlooking.

    The platform LAMP stack is explained here: http://mediatemple.net/webhosting/dv/features/ and I am administering the server via Plesk. I have a client set up for the domain, and the domain is on a shared IP. I do not have root access enabled on the platform right now.

    Thanks for the help.

      1. Make sure that you’ve changed the settings in the Configuration in the File Manager tab (as well as the Interface and Features tab) as far as the file paths go. Are they still pointing to your old server?

      2. Check the php.info view in the Reports -> System Info and make sure that the PHP on your new server does in fact have uploads enabled.

      3. Make sure that the directories you’re trying to upload to are writable by php (the permissions necessary for this will depend on how PHP is running, as the Apache user or as the owner of the script).

        Thanks for the help.

        All the paths under the configuration tab are correct for the current server and I checked the php.info and confirmed that file uploads were on. The permissions for the directories look right as well but I did notice one thing;

        I disabled PHP Safe Mode locally for the domain in Plesk but when looking at the php.info file I can see that the local value reads Off but the Master Value reads On. I think that maybe I need to find out how to disable PHP safe mode on the entire server. Maybe MT’s PHP safe mode causes all files to be owned by Apache instead of the user if safe mode is on across the server...

        Is it possible that the Master Value for that setting could override the Local Setting?

          It shouldn’t, but it may be applying to your main web root folder, thus not allowing any uploads to anything in there? I’m not sure about that.

            Is there any way that you might be able to explain this to me...I am really not sure how php is running on this server. I was pretty sure that it was as the user but maybe it is the owner.

            If PHP is running as the script owner what would I want the file permissions to be. Right now I am going to try 777 for the assets sub-folders.

              I have had issues with permissions on the Media Temple DV also (although not with MODx). There are a few work arounds usually involving modifications to Apache. Here is a link on their wiki that will get you started. http://wiki.mediatemple.net/w/Working_around_permissions_issues_on_the_%28dv%29_Dedicated-Virtual
