htaccess - RewriteEngine On

Trying to enable friendly URLs on a dev server is throwing the dreaded 500 - Internal Server Error.

I’ve commented out everything in the .htaccess file except the line:



This alone is causing the error. Commenting this one line out eliminates it, so it’s not a common path issue, but rather an issue with the rewriting junx in general.

Any ideas or links are appreciated.

1. Are you sure mod_rewrite is installed?
2. Try using rewrite rules without the "RewriteEngine On" line
