Hi
Question from a possible client - ’how many people use modx?’
Obviusly we can and did point to some of the high profile sites using the system, and I seemed to remember there used to be a downloads figure on the download page, but can’t find it on the new site.
Clearly getting accurate usage figures is difficult/impossible but does anyone have any pointers -
Any suggestions for a metric and a number to show how popular modx is?
Regards
Mark

I would say tens- if not hundreds-of-thousands of websites are built on MODx. You’ll never get an accurate count until I can invest some time and dollars with a statistician, but here’s some bullet points:
[*] A Fortune 50 tech company uses it
[*] A ton of high profile charity sites in the UK use it (seems like His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales’ people are quite fond of it)
[*] One of the largest private companies in the US uses it (over $25B in annual revenues)
[*] It has a good track record of security reports on sites like secunia.com: 7 for MODx, 216 for Drupal, 139 for Joomla, 125 for Wordpress
[*] It’s been download over half a million times and for the current release at a rate of over 5000 times per week.
[*] More than a dozen releases over the last 5 years and there will be 2 more (or more!) this year
[*] It does great in comparison reviews, but it’s not always the right choice for everyone
[*] It imposes absolutely zero restrictions on what you can output—there’s no forced taxonomy and no heirarchy limits. Also, you don’t need a 600 page book to figure out how to create a completely custom look for your site or have to use a modified available theme—use whatever html, css and js you please.
[*] Hands down the best community anywhere!

Thanks Ryan!
Have sent on your points - thanks for taking the time to do that.
Hadn’t seen the Prince of Wales site, that’s a nice one!

I read recently that modxcms.com gets about 60,000 visitors a day, but don’t know if that’s remotely accurate.
Some are bots, some are people looking for a CMS, but I’d guess the majority are people with a MODx website or two.
Is there any way to tell if a site is running under modx?

If you want to have a guess and you’re running firefox and firebug, take a peak at the source. Even if it’s not sure, a MODx site have all resources link in assets folder (header).

Hi Sottwell
Yes, that’s what I did too before posting!
(and in the back of my mind thought I wonder if I can change that because it might open me to possible attack)
