I am just about to move a modx revo site. I have searched, and most of the documents assume that the users have a base back end knowledge, which unforutnately I don’t.

I found http://rtfm.modx.com/display/revolution20/Moving+Your+Site+to+a+New+Server but am not sure where to start with the command "tar -czf /path/to/backups/modx_revo_site.tar.gz /path/to/modx_doc_root/" and am not sure what to do with it.

Please can anyone point me in the right direction for an absolute beginners guide to moving a modx revo site.

    Cheers,

    Mitch

I believe that section assumes that you have Unix shell access. All it’s doing is creating a compressed archive of all the files (essentially the unix equivalent of a .zip file) which you then copy and extract from on the new site.

You can do the same thing (only slower) by using FTP to copy the files down to your local machine and then up to the new server.

            Hi Bob,

Wouldn’t transfering the files locally then uploading them to the server cause problems with the invisible files?

I’m not sure what you mean by "invisible files"

You’d have to be careful with certain files: the 4 config.core.php files, core/config/config.inc.php file, and .htaccess (and of course any php.ini files). Either don’t copy them, or copy them and edit them.
