does anyone have any experience installing MODx on powweb?

i’ve used them for years, and have multiple MODx installations running on multiple domains they host, but the most recent version of MODx i have installed is v1.0.

i wanted to install MODx on a new domain and was excited to try v2.0. unfortunately, after not being able to get it to work, i discovered that powweb’s version of mysql was 5.0.45 which doesn’t meet MODx v2.0’s requirement of mysql 5.1.1. so i decided to install v1.0.4, assuming it would work like v1.0 had in the past.

unfortunately, even with this older version i cannot get past the "install now" screen. i click "install now" and get an error 500 instantly.

i’ve tried modifying my php.ini file to point to a phpsessions directory, as explained here:
    http://ops.powweb.com/knowledgebase/beta/article.bml?ArticleID=1290

but gotten nowhere, and don’t know what else to try. i asked a friend who knows about server stuff, but because powweb doesn’t seem to offer php error logs he couldn’t get very far either.

is it possible MODx simply won’t work on powweb anymore even tho it used to?

does anyone have any ideas for something to try? ideal would be if someone was familiar with powweb and their awful cpanel crap... but i’m sure most people in this forum use a better host, so that’s a long shot. still, can’t hurt to ask!

I have no experience with the host but 2.0 is a total rewrite and
      uses PHP PDO drivers etc.

      Are file permissions right?

wow! i can’t believe i missed that! i think you’re right. i had set everything to 777, but it turned out most stuff needed to be 755 i think. cause now the installer seems to be working! thanks so much for making me double check!

If the server is configured to use some kind of suexec, or su_php, then the folders do need to be 755 for security purposes.
