    Hi All,

Just wanted to post a note on this, because I couldn’t find the solution elsewhere on the board.

I found that with MODx friendly urls on, I was able to see the contents of a subdirectory that I made by hand, e.g. ’shop’, until I added .htaccess authentication. When I did that, I got the MODx error page.

The solution was to make an .htaccess file in the ’shop’ subdir, with this line:

    ErrorDocument 401 "Unauthorized access"

Just in case anyone finds that useful.

I found the solution via Google, in a Wordpress blog, and *then* (ha!) I found a cleaner solution in the .htaccess file of the shopping cart I was trying to install (Interspire). Quoting from the Interspire (ISC) .htaccess file:

    # Force 401 pages to use a valid error document
    # so they do not fall back to the 404 which is
    # triggered by ISC. This allows HTTP Auth to work
    # correctly

(If I had looked there first, I would have saved 2 hours. Oy.)

Note that I did NOT have to include a line to turn off mod rewriting.

    Yours,

    Peter Brown
