A number of core.<various number> (for example core.1582) files have apeared in the top directory where modx is kept. Are these necessary to modx? They are about 15 to 18 megabytes each.

Those are "core dumps" - binary logs of various apllication (mostly Apache) crashes.

Would configuring the .htaccess file to get friendly urls (failing countless times along the way) have anything to do with that? Because now I think back that’s around the time they appeared.

That could well account for it. It is perfectly safe to remove them; they are just detailed reports provided by the server itself.

Ok I have removed them, I will keep an eye on it and get in touch with my web server if any come back.

Thank you both for your help.

I had the same problem on a modx site on dreamhost a few years ago. The core files would get huge. Are you on dreamhost?

I’m not, I’m on web hosting buzz. I think my issue must have been due to configuring the htaccess file like I suggested. Been a month now and no core.#### files have turned up.
