    Hi there,

    I really want to run modx, but I keep getting stuck on the connection information page of installation.

    I enter my database information and get the message: Connecting to mysql server: Success!

    but then after I enter these details below:

    Connection character set: UTF8
    Collation: utf_general_ci

    It doesn’t do anything when pressing ’Create or test selection of your database.’

    I’m a bit of a noob with myphp/mysql etc so go easy on me! thanks!

            that is on the page where you were stuck
            under this :
            Connection character set: UTF8
            Collation: utf_general_ci

            you can see that there is character set or, you can click the drop down arrow and then select "Set Names"

                Are you installing Revo or Evo? For Revo there is no SET NAMES option as far as I can tell as there is for Evo, so this may be why you’re not seeing it.

                I assume from your description that you already created the database and aren’t relying on the installer to create it for you.

                Go into phpmyadmin, and select the database you created. Then click on Operations, and scroll down to see what the collation is set to. If it’s not utf_general_ci, change it to that, and then try the install again and see if it works.

                  Hey einsteinsboi; thanks for getting back to me on this. You are right, I’m installing REVO and so I don’t see a Set Names option. Thanks for that. I went into PHP Admin and here are my details:

                  MySQL

                  * Server: Localhost via UNIX socket
                  * Server version: 5.1.48
                  * Protocol version: 10
                  * User: sulman@localhost
                  * MySQL charset: UTF-8 Unicode (utf8)

                  Web server

                  * cpaneld
                  * MySQL client version: 5.1.48
                  * PHP extension: mysql

                  phpMyAdmin

                  * Version information: 3.2.4

                  I created a database manually via MySQL, went to the Operations tab and ensured it was in utf8_general; no dice. On my phpAdmin settings, it says the MYSQL Charset is ut8_unicode, so I changed everything (collation, etc.) to unicode and it still doesn’t work. Could the error be in my php.ini or a setting in there somewhere? I’m so perplexed. Also, I do NOT get any error messages; it just hangs, meaning nothing happens no matter how many times I click on it.

                    laugh Success! Thanks Einstiensboi from sparing me the "Set Names" problem, but I poked around and I think I just overlooked something insanely stupid and simple.

                    So it all hinged on the "database name" field. Instead of just leaving it as is ("modx"), I included the special prefix my server uses.
                    I.e. instead of just leaving it "modx" i put "sulman_modx" which is the exact name of the database I manually created. I also changed the prefix field to "sulman_" since that is the prefix used by all my databases. That seemed to do the trick. Hope that helps someone.

                    To summarize:
                    1. Manually create a MySQL database for Modx via your CPANEL or whatever other system you use.
                    2. Add a user to that database and give it all privileges.
                    3. Run the ModX installation from your browser and follow prompts.
                    4. Input the following info:

                    Database host: localhost
                    Database login name: [Your loginin name from Step #2]
                    Database password: [Your login pw from Step #2]
                    Database name: [the FULL NAME Of the DB you created in #1...so for me it was sulman_modx]
                    Table prefix: whatever the prefix is

                    5. Click "test" and you should be ok!!

                      Excellent smiley Glad you were able to sort this out. It’s a common error where you forget to replace the default values with your own specific values smiley

                      I have just finished writing up a tutorial on installing Revolution and made sure to emphasize the importance of the prefix, because that tends to trip a lot of people up.

                      Please remember to add SOLVED to your post title.

                      5. Alter the prefix as necessary based on your specific SQL settings
