First off, just have to say that I LOVE working with Modx for my personal site. It’s easy to learn and the most flexible CMS I’ve ever seen.

That said, I’m struggling between Drupal and Modx for some of my client’s sites, simply for one reason:

Let’s say my client wants to add a image gallery... is he or she going to have to type in a snippet call to make that happen? Maybe I’m not yet versed enough in Modx yet to know all the tricks, but it seems to me that post-design user-friendliness is lacking, aside from what can be done with QuickEdit on the front end (which is cool as crap, btw)

Please someone point me to a resource or technique that will help me make my site more user friendly for my clients. I truly despise drupal’s theming engine, so the less I have to do in it the better..

    Thanks in advance,
    Chris

I use NewsPublisher to allow users to create new photo galleries in the front end. Here is the full content of the "Add Photo Gallery" page:

      [!NewsPublisher? &clearcache=`1` &folder=`25` &template=PhotoGalleryTemplate &canpost=`wugPhotoAdmins` &showinmenu=1 &footertpl=`MyPhotoGalleryChunk`!]

Maybe that would work for you. smiley

      MyPhotoGalleryChunk:

      <h3>Click on a photo to see a larger version</h3><br/><p>[!MaxiGallery? &display=`embedded` &embedtype=`slimbox` &pics_per_row=`3` &max_thumb_size=`110` &admin_webgroups=`wugPhotoAdmins` &manager_webgroups=`Photo Admins` &max_pic_size=`480` &thumb_use_dropshadow=`1`!]</p>

I have a lot of clients that have image gallery’s, mostly done using ditto a couple of tv’s and lightbox or slimbox however these are set up from the beginning and when the client wants to add a image they just log in via the manager and create a document under the Gallery page, add the image through the tv and a title and click save and publish, this then displays on the front end.

There are also a fer gallery snippits on here that do the same sort of thing so maybe use one of them.

If the fact that a client may decide they want a gallery after the site has been built then I would guess that it is better for them to come back to you as it would be a chargable extra grin

If you want them to just have the abillity to install / use a gallery 3 months down the line and not come back to you then why not create one from the start and just not publish the page, it only takes 10 mins which you would save on the actuall build as Modx is easier to do than Drupal grin

Not sure if any of the gallery’s out there allow people to add from the front end but you could look into that.

With the method I described, the photo editor can create as many photo galleries as she likes from the front end. She enters title for the gallery page and optional text for the top of the gallery page and clicks a button to save it. All the galleries can be accessed through the menu, or through the master gallery page which features the first picture from each sub-gallery as a link to that sub-gallery.

Each gallery has a "Manage Photos" button on it that she can use to upload, delete, sort, caption, and title photos using the built-in MaxiGallery functions. Each gallery uses the same CSS and Template and offers a slimbox presentation if you click on one of the photos. All the photos have drop shadows.

I usually just create a Photo Gallery template with the MaxiGallery snippet call below the main content (or something similar, depending upon the site).

I put MG in a chunk or a snippet with a conditional function attached to a checkbox TV so that the editor can toggle a gallery on/off page-by-page.

Mine are usually in a dropdown list (for a different layout options), with hidden gallery output as default...
