I want to help a non-profit library to move their database fom local files to a web repository. So far I tried with Drupal and RoR, but I always struggle with the following requirement:
One single work in the database can have 1..n contributors (like author, translator, editor....), so every contributor needs a name AND a "role". If I create a TV for name and for role I can group those two. But who can I now assign one or many of those grouped contributor fileds (name+role) to a single work? In the data input form there should be some kind of "plus" sign to allow another contributor field group to be added or deleted.

So far the library is doing this with an XML Schema and some Altova XML stylesheet app, and it works there, creating a local XML file. Mapping this to a relational database and a user web form gives me major headaches, so I wanted to ask if it makes sense to dive into MODX.

Dear experts out there, please just tell me if it would be possible, if yes I will find my way though it.

    Thanks a lot,
    karl,

modx is really flexible so it’s possible. Multi-TV (button to add another) is not available in modx right now. But there is a way.

Without knowing more, this is how I would do it:
        1. Create a module that links a document to many users with a role (with a nice ajax +add another button)
        2. Create a plugin that creates a link that opens the above module. This plugin would run OnDocFormRender
        3. Create a snippet to show this on the frontpage

        More Info
        1. Module - Would create all of the logic for assigning users and roles to documents
        2. Plugin - This would just insert the link and javascript to use a lightbox to open the form on the document editing page
        3. Snippet - This would let you retrieve the info from the database and show it on the frontend.

thank you, rajfantastic, the link to the other forum posting was helpfull.

thank you, too, chuckktrukk, the general impression for me now is that it is possible with workarounds, and I will start investing some time to bring it into code. my interest is a basic and simple approach, the GUI or Ajax-ness is not my focus.

FYI, the XML schema which I try to emulate is for the "Digital Object Identifier", which is a good data modell and persistency framework also for web articles. So far it is used only by the large publishing houses (think PAPER), but we try to adapt it for usage on non-profit authors/artists web work repositories:
