Been searching for an extra or other approach to build this for a friend, but haven’t found anything that looks solid. Any suggestions?

If you want it to actually show open spots and let people sign up for a certain time slot... you’ll probably want it to be viewable by your friend in the hair salon too, allowing him to modify things and keep it updated.
Sounds like something bigger then an addon, I’m thinking corporate software packages now.
I once had a client who wanted an availability calendar on his site: he’s got a summerhouse he lets people rent. Eventually he asked me to just put up his phone number cause he didn’t want his competitors to know how well his business is running simply by looking at the calendar.
It’s up to you and your friend, but I would advise you to buy a paper calendar and have people call for an appointment. And if you must offer it online, could make a form where people can ask for a reservation at a certain time, after which your friend emails/calls to confirm. Imo, it’s better to stay in control like that.
