I am running a development server www.website.com which houses the new design for a client. This development server has a whole slew of folders for other clients. Currently, www.website.com/modx/ is the home for www.newwebsite.com’s new design.

if I haven’t lost you yet, www.newwebsite.com is also running MODx. My initial thought was to export the SQL file for www.website.com/modx/ and then import them to www.newwebsite.com. However, because website.com/modx/ and newwebsite.com/ are generally the same, most of their fields/rows/tables whichever are the same and when importing the SQL file it throws an error saying, "hey wait, there’s duplicate things, sawwy."

Is there a proper way to move MODx files from one server running on to another server also running MODx.

Thanks in advance as I’m sure this has been asked numerous times.

What I usually do is a one-on-one copy of all files from one server to another, and then a simple phpmyadmin export and import on the new server. But then there’s no modx preinstalled/running on the new server yet.

From that Serverfault link you posted, I’m interpreting that you are trying to only move over templates, chunks, tv’s etc, while keeping the content of newwebsite.com intact?

I’d imagine just selectively exporting tables from website.com/modx, and deleting those you want used on newwebsite.com to avoid the duplicates.

If you’re running the same version of MODx on both, I don’t imagine this will do harm. Just gotta be careful in selecting the tables to drop wink

Correct, there is completely new content on newwebsite. I feel my only option is to back up the sql assets/ and other folders and then drop the table. and put in the new data.
