I have experience of making sites with Dreamweaver.
I have one site with MODx which I did not design but I maintain. I managed to get this on to my computer so I can run it locally with Xampp - with help from this forum.
I am now looking at the possibilities of designing a new site with MODx. So far I have installed a blank MODx locally which is working, this is a separate to the site I manage.
I now need to construct the site with HTML and CSS.
My question is should all this be done within MODx or should I contruct the HTML and CSS in Dreamweaver and then copy to MODx? Should I forget about Dreamweaver?

My suggestion is with respect to HTML and CSS, do it in the programme you are comfortable with - whether Dreamweaver, Notepad, It’s All Text, etc, etc, inserting the necessary MODx tags. then copy it over to MODx. Cheers.

IMO, it kind of depends on how you are using Dreamweaver. First of all, if you are putting PHP in the files, you’ll have to move it to snippets. If you are used to using Dreamweaver templates without PHP, you could create your site in DW and then use the DW template as a MODx template after removing the "editable" areas and putting them in chunks, snippets, or document content fields.
I used to use DW templates, but mainly coded in plain HTML. I found it easier to just use the MODx Manager and stopped using DW altogether. Generally, doing everything in MODx will provide most of the same tools and save a few steps, IMHO.
This might help you think about some of the issues involved:

Thanks for all the information - I am now getting an understanding of MODx.
Also I have found a template which suits my needs:
Multiflex-5.4
