    Hey Folks,

    I’ve been able to install on a local machine as well as at Eleven2 hosting. I tried two attempts (reg & advanced version 2 rc-1)at media temple. Everything goes well until the installation summary shows;

    Checking MySQL client version: Failed! - You are running on MySQL 4.1.11, and MODx Revolution requires MySQL 4.1.20 or later. Please upgrade MySQL to at least 4.1.20.

    Can someone clue me in on how to remedy this?

      As MT to upgrade. That said, I’m sure others are running there, though if you’re talking about on Grid accounts you’re in for other problems most likely.

        I did ask them and they said it was the software as they are running mysql 5.1.26. In the installation summary I see that in the line above the alert. That line says server version and the alert line says client version.

        So I guess my next few questions are what is the difference between the server and client version of mysql and why are some folks able to install at media temple?

          I’m running Revo on the grid server, and over the last year and a half it’s taken different tricks to get it to happen.
          Right now, I think the client version problem you’re experiencing is the only one I’ve had to work around recently.
          It’ll actually run fine with the 4.1.11 client library, though I bet there are some edge cases that will present bugs.
          Here’s how you can get past the problem:

          Open setup/includes/modinstalltest.class.php

          Comment out line 29 so that the "run" method in it’s entirety looks like this:
          <?php
          ...
              /**
               * Run tests.
               *
               * @param integer $mode The install mode.
               * @return array An array of result messages collected during the process.
               */
              public function run($mode = modInstall::MODE_NEW) {
                  $this->results = array();
                  $this->mode = $mode;

                  $this->_checkDependencies();
                  $this->_checkPHPVersion();
                  $this->_checkMySQLServerVersion();
                  //$this->_checkMySQLClientVersion();
                  $this->_checkMemoryLimit();
                  $this->_checkSessions();
                  $this->_checkCache();
                  $this->_checkExport();
                  $this->_checkPackages();
                  $this->_checkContexts();
                  $this->_checkConfig();
                  $this->_checkDatabase();

                  return $this->results;
              }

          That’s it. You’re just bypassing the check during install.

            By the way, the difference between the server and client versions of MySQL are due to the fact that there are two pieces of software involved. First there’s the actual MySQL Server.. they’re running version 5.1.26 of that. Second, PHP is compiled with a library called "mysqlclient" which allows C programs to access a database (the PHP engine itself being a C program). They’re running version 5.1.11 of that. (Actually mysqlclient isn’t the only possible client library PHP can use to access a MySQL server, but at this point I start to get confused ;-)

            Ryan’s right - they should upgrade. I don’t imagine that all of their support staff even understand the distinction between the Server and Client versions. It’s one of those situations where you have to learn enough to convince a support person that you know more than they do, and then they’ll escalate it to someone who can actually help you.
