For some odd reason, after creating a page with a very long page title (in the ’Title’ input box) that particular page becomes completely inaccessible once saved. I can’t even look at the document to edit it via the manager. I managed to get one page to work again by accessing the page via the QM on the front end and shortening the title. After changing the title it suddenly worked again in the manager (so I at least assume that is the problem). HOWEVER, there is another page having that same problem but it wasn’t published so I can’t even get to it via QM now.

I’m at a loss. Anyone know a way to fix this?

Go into the database using your control panel’s database client (usually phpMyAdmin), find the content in question in the modx_site_content table, and edit it there.

After running some test on my localhost installation, I feel compelled to ask what kind of "very long page title" are we talking about huh huh

I pasted an entire "lorem ipsum" paragraph in; the text field cut it off after a certain point, and it’s still perfectly accessible.

Lorem ipsum numquam reprimique complectitur eos no, eu pro omnesque liberavisse, ei eam maiestatis inciderint. Ius te fugit nobis eripuit, eum alii labitur sensibus ei. Ut sed laudem graeci, impedit perfecto persequeris vix te. Ne quis facete aliquyam sea

Weird. Mine wasn’t anywhere near that long. Though still very long. Maybe 2/3 that at the most? I’ll try out your solution you suggested earlier. Thanks btw.

The pagetitle field is varchar(255). I wonder if there's more room there if you use UTF8 as opposed to Latin1.

If your title is longer than that, you might consider putting it in the summary (introtext) field and adjusting the tags in your template. That's a "text" field and will hold over 65K.

You might also check to see if you have any odd characters in the title (especially if you cut and pasted the title from somewhere else). [ed. note: BobRay last edited this post 13 years, 4 months ago.]

For SEO and Search Engine reasons, try to keep your Titles to a max of 80 characters -- many SE will display approx 60 characters, but still read 80 characters (some will downgrade priority re-indexing a bit if pages have excessively long titles -- especially if relevancy doesn’t fully match the actual content).

If you need longer titles, try using the ’Long Title’ for an alternate version (I’ll often call that data into use on page displays anyhow, so it helps ensure my browser/page title doesn’t degrade ranking strength or usage).

BobRay, I just had this problem in May 2013. I cannot recall how I solved it but you are correct that some foul characters got into the title, at the tail end of the title.

I had to go into MySQL and edit out the foul characters. It was easy to see where the bad characters were (in all title lines) because they look like characters humans would hardly ever use.

Nice post. Hoped you helped some people with this very strange problem. My bet: a MSWord cut 'n paste caused it.
