Is Modx the solution Im looking for?

Hello,

I am totally new to modx, but someone suggested I pop over here and check it out. I am fairly comfortable using and dismantling wordpress etc. but I now have a project for a friend that all of the wordpress solutions or plugins seem more like hacks than properly doing things.

Basically, what I want to be able to do (for my friends site) he is a jr. High golf coach and wants his kids to be able to register for his site by filling out an extensive registration form, and then have access to specific areas of the site, along with him being able to manage those users somehow. WP has a plugin called "Register Plus" that allows for custom registration fields etc. but it’s really kinda bulky, and as I said, a wp plugin so, not exactly a solid solution.

Does this sound like something I should dig deeper into modx about or, should I just learn more PhP?

That series of articles is very much a work in progress; only the first "type" is covered. However, the WebLoginPE documentation is very clear, although short on actual examples.
