404 pages not work, get 403 error instead

When I go to a url that does not exist on my site, instead of getting a 404 page, I get a 403 page.. why is this happening

Look in tools configuration at the error_page and unauthorized_page settings and at what pages they point to. It looks like your error_page setting points to your unauthorized document.

Unfortunately both the error page and the unauthorized page are set. The weird thing is that any page in http://www.mysite.com/modx/ gives a 404 error and displays the page listed in settings. /modx/ used to be where modx was installed, but i recently moved it up to root.

Make sure there is a <base href="[(site_url)]"></base> tag in all templates.

Be sure to do an upgrade install in the new location, that clears the cache and resets the locations settings.

If you have an .htaccess file, make sure any paths in it (e.g. Rewrite Base) point to the new location, not the old one.

That should be correct if the site is in the root (e.g. public_html) rather than a subdirectory.

Upgrade install:

Important: back up the site first so you can restore it if anything goes wrong.

http://yoursite.com/install

Be sure not to install the sample site! Or any components that you’ve modified.

You’ll probably have to re-upload the /install directory first (it must be the one you used originally).

Do you mean that you couldn’t do an upgrade install, or that you did one and it didn’t help?

BTW, what version of MODx, PHP, and MySQL are you using?

I upgraded it, but it didnt fix the problem. My modx version is rev 6066, my database version (MySQL) is 5.0.67, and my php version is 5.2.6.

The only things left to try that I can think of are:

1. Clear the MODx cache, then clear your browser cache and cookies.

2. Turn off Friendly URLs in Tools | Configuration and rename the .htaccess file in the root to ht.access.

If #2 fixes it, it’s almost certainly a problem with the rewrite rules in .htaccess. If neither one fixes it, I’m stumped. :’(
