Going to try out the menu via a Wayfinder snippet tomorrow. Still can’t work out why the UL way don’t work - grrrrr.
Stupid question here on my part ...
When I look at the page source in IE, it appears that the "Doctype" declaration at the top is appearing after the html and head tags. Is that really true or is there something goofy with the way I’m looking at the page source?

I would try using a simplified version using Wayfinder without using tables and additional conditional markup in the menu itself.
On a presentational note: I would simplify your menu. Maybe create a simple horizontal menu at the top and a secondary vertical menu in a sidebar? I like sites with simple clean navigation. Some sites have like 60 places to go. Expecting folks to tour a ton of drop down menu options is expecting a lot. Some users dislike "click, drag, scroll, hold and click menus." I have watched users get frustrated with menu systems that try to cram in too many links. Often it takes good good mouse skills to navigate through these menus. More people are using their fingers (no mouse) on all kinds of devices which makes simple navigation more important. Something to consider anyways.
There is a great document of Wayfinder on this site. Its very detailed. I would read that first.
Thanks for all the help guys - Matt hit the nail on the head - I’d got the docutype in the wrong place inside the html tags and it was doing weird things in MODx. And yeah point taken about the menu structure - but out of my hands - despite advice the client is ’always right’. Sound familar?
