    Hi,

I am completely new to CMS’s but have some previous web dev experience in programming vb/asp with MS access and SQL server db. Am looking at ModX, Joomla and Drupal as options.

My project is to set up a community website which is essentially a database of shops which can be searched for by the user and viewed as a list, which would then link to detailed single page information about each shop with an image(s).

The search would be along the lines of returning a list where the user chooses categorie(s) region/state or zip/postcode. (e.g. select all shops from tableABC where category = Clothing and State = New York). At some point I’d want to add in user reviews of each shop, plus news and special offers.

Can anyone advise whether ModX might be suitable for this please? Are there any templates? I don’t want to invest a lot of time and effort only to find that the functionality options might be limited and I’m then into a lot of custom code in an unfamiliar script.

Many thanks in advance for everyone’s help!
    Cheers, Mark.

A database of shops themselves or the shops products? If it is the shops then this is easy for MODx. Each shop will have it’s own page and you can then use searches or tag filters on the pages.

Hi, thanks for the quick response.

Would be a database of shops themselves. Presumably I’d just build a template and populate with the content (would be quite a lot of different fields)?

        Cheers, Mark.

You can use a lot of Template Variables (custom fields) if the number is reasonable (maybe 10 or 20 but there is not real limit) but if there will be a lot of fields then you might prefer using a custom database setup and use a plugin or module to manage the data. The advantages of using TVs is that they can be used with other add-ons for searching and filtering as well as indexing.
