I’m using LAMP on Debian Lenny. I had a Drupal install on here but have removed it.

I have not changed httpd.conf, etc.

I successfully completed installing MODx. There were several permissions issues with sub-dirs, but after following the Basic Install guide those seemed to be resolved effectively.

However, when I access the site, I see the directory structure. Then I click on index.php and the preview browser page is displayed. Then I click on the admin link to access the control panel and I get the dir structure again. Again I click on index.php and the CP browser page is displayed. When I switch back to preview, I get the dir structure again.

Once I’m on the page I can nav fine through the page links except for switching back to the cp or preview.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Just a guess, but does your httpd.cnf file have this?

      DirectoryIndex index.php

I appreciate the suggestion. I went back through the conf files to check that. I remember that setting in Apache 1.3.whatever. But in Apache2, with the conf file being split up, I didn’t remember where I had put that. Turns out in the vhosts conf in <VirtualHost *:80> associated with DirectoryIndex. I honestly don’t know if this is a misconfig or not. This conf had worked for a Drupal install that I had on here recently.

BTW: I was tired of the obtuse interface/concepts of Drupal and so have developed an interest in MODx.

Looking at the menu selections, it appears as though only the top-most links are affected.

        For example...

When in the CP and editing a page with the "Site" tab selected, if I hover over the "Preview" button, the status bar shows the path /localhost/mysite/.

But when I hover over the "preview" button that is in the upper-right corner of the page editing area, the path is http://localhost/mysite/manager/index.php?a=27&id=1#

The same holds true for the links in the "My MODx Site | Home" page. When hovering over the "Home" tab, the path /localhost/mysite/ displays. But when navigating to any other pages (ie, Blog, Features, etc) the paths are completed with the "php?id=(number)"

My guess is that I’m dealing with a problem associated with clean URLs, rewrite, or ht.access.

I was confused by your use of CP to refer to the MODx Manager (I assume that’s what you mean). smiley

Make sure your template has <base href="[(site_start)] /> at the top.

The same holds true for the links in the "My MODx Site | Home" page. When hovering over the "Home" tab, the path /localhost/mysite/ displays. But when navigating to any other pages (ie, Blog, Features, etc) the paths are completed with the "php?id=(number)"

I believe that’s normal. If fact, I think everything you’re seeing may be normal (unless you can’t reach the pages via the links). smiley

If you want to see the links normally in the front end, you need to look at the site in another browser where you’re not logged in to the Manager. IIRC, the home page link won’t normally have the file name. There’s a fix for that, but I can’t remember what it is. tongue

Sorry, my bad re CP (Control Panel == MODx Manager). I was tired and getting more lazy by the letter.

The links do work in the dir view. I’ll add the "base href" and press on.

My first favorite CMS was e107. This was 4 or 5 years ago. Since then I offered to help a local radio station with their site. They wanted Drupal so I gave it a shot. Drupal strikes me like something made for a right-handed person but a left-handed person did the interface. The word "convoluted" comes to mind whenever I think of it now.

I have to say that the MODx installation is really easy and the demo I ran was pretty straight-forward. I’m eager to try it out.

Thanks a bunch, BobRay. Your help is appreciated.

I’m sure Drupal has its uses, but I also found it hopelessly arcane compared to MODx.
