What are your recommendations when redesigning a site that has gone live and is accessed daily by content managers?

I have created a subdomain on the live server for the purpose, to which I have uploaded a copy of the live site. I have also upgraded the development copy to 1.0.2 (live site is 0.9.6.3)

The only instance where you can spot a reference to the mysql db to be used, is in the config.inc.php file, right?
Since this file was left untouched during copy and upgrade to 1.0.2 I ended up with a development installation using the same db as the live one. This can of course easily be changed in the config file. To keep it safe, I created a new db at the same database host as the live site is using and imported a backup of the live db into the newly created db. I now have two duplicate setups (site + db) with the only difference being the version.
But will also end up with two parallell db:s evolving in different directions, which is not so good.

How is the design-content separation supposed to be working in modx? Could I operate against the same db, adding TV:s, javascripts, css files (external) and then when it’s ready to fly, just swap the old live site for the new one keeping the same db all along?

It seems a bit shaky, but how would you go about otherwise? The live site is being updated by others on a daily basis.
