Hello MODxperts. I’ve done some pretty extensive searches within the forum and have looked through many a topic, but can’t see to find what I need.

I have a client who uses modx and I have been updating their pages as needed, content updates, form creation, pretty basic stuff. I didn’t set up the modx site, just have come into it.

They have contracted with a design firm to redesign the site and want to keep the site under modx. The vendor wants to have a duplicate site so that they can work their designs into the cms.

So how do I duplicate the entire site so that it is an actual working site, separate from the current site and from hidden from public view? Is this something I shouldn’t even try on my own?

In any other language, html/php/asp, I could just duplicate the site down to a sub-directory and have them work out of that. But with all the connections to /assets, templates, the db, etc, I know this is not how its done in modx. But I have to figure its done relatively easy with the topics I found on staging sites. Hmm, maybe setting up a staging site that wasn’t sync’d with the live site until AFTER they were done might make sense.

Any help with duplicating the site or setting up a staging server would be greatly appreciated. I’d have to assume someone has asked this question before so a link to the topic would be just as helpful.

    TIA,
    - tony (shamed to call himself webmaster amongst the xperts)

Theres a couple of ways you can do this.

1st way is to download the files via ftp and upload them to the new server / domain / localhost, then take a backup of the database and and import it into a new db on the server the copy site sits on, then edit the config file to represent the new database info ( ie username. password etc ).

2nd way is to just create new templates and new pages to use the templates on the current site but never publish them, this way when the new design is ready to go live you just need to go in and edit the templates the pages use ;o)

Thanks Paul. The FTP scenario is what I worked out from all the topics I read on migrating to a new server. That does make sense. Just would be nice to run a duplicate site out of a sub-directory without having to do a complete install of MODx. But, since they are paying by the hour, its what I have to do. wink
