Hi, I am going to be working on a fully blown web 2.0 site shortly and an essential functionality is that we have a completely integrated community system where users are able to register to the site and their account will give them access to a forum and personal blog amongst other things.

I need your advice on how to tackle this and what route to take.

Integrating phpBB with an existing open source blogging system and into the site’s own login system seems like a nightmare as they are complete self functioning systems that were never intended or designed to fit together.

Is there an existing packing that can be bought that is composed of a forum integrated with a blogging system which can be used within a site and integrated with a website’s own login and registration system?

Are there any blogging and/or forum snippets pre-made for modx. Ditto isn’t much of an option as what i need is that every user will be able to have their own blog and post in it.

Any ideas and/or thoughts would be very much appreciated

    Andrew

Anything you use will need integrating into the login system. As far as I know only SMF has been integrated into Modx however I am not sure if it has a blogging system.

Invision Power Board has a member blogging system built into it however this is licensed software and you will have to purchase a license for the forum and the blog. The login has also been integrated with Modx ( theres a post on the forum about it somewhere ) however I don’t think it has been documented.

I think what you need is going to take some sweat and tears on your part to accomplish with MODx. Depending on how good you are at coding, you can pretty much twist anything out of MODx, but I can’t say for sure that there currently exists a foolproof working integration between MODx and any external forum system. The SMF bridge seems to stymie most people, I haven’t tried it yet. For blogging, you can use pubkit but if you’re looking to build something the caliber of Wordpress you’re in for some more sweat and tears.

One thing you could consider is looking at systems that already integrate those three things in one, the first one that comes to mind for me is Drupal because I use it often. It has an inbuilt forum (nothing fancy but it’s functional) and inbuilt multi-user blog, all tightly integrated into the core.

Again, you can do this with MODx, all things are possible with MODx grin, just depends on what you’re willing to put it in terms of sweat equity and what your coding skills are.
