I have been doing a lot of research of the different CMS software available since my employer wants to get rid of using Contribute. There is an existing site that is saved as PHP files, the pages themselves are created using a bunch of include statements in order to prevent an authorized editor from messing with the layout. I have been playing around with MODx for the past couple of days and found that I can set up the pages the way they were suppose to be in the first place (with uneditable and editable areas). The biggest question I have is...is it possible to have MODx hosted on server A but edit a website hosted on server B?
The reason I’m asking is that we want to put this on a Linux server however, the current website is on a Windows server and we can’t really move the entire site without having DNS and applications issues.
Not sure about the question. But you can use modx to export as HTML then use something like svn to update/commit the changes after exporting.
another, possibly better, option is setting up you windows server to host php/mysql and run modx directly on the windows server. OneSmartHost (forum member) hosts modx on windows servers and has it down to science. Edit your title to include "MODx on IIS" and you will get more specific help.

I’d second dev_cw’s second suggestion as well.
MODx doesn’t currently support the kind of staging solution I think you’re after at the moment and, although there may be several ways to try and work around the issue, I don’t think any of them would give you the interaction you’re after.
