Having a problem installing on Mac. I’m using MAMP, which is installed and working fine. Following the instructions in the book "MODx Web Development", I created a user learningmodx and database with the same name, and I have verified with myPHPadmin that they did get created.
I’m able to start the install and the test database server and view collations passes.
However, the test selection of your database fails. I enter database name learningMODx, table prefix modx_, connection method set character set and collation utf8_general_ci and it fails saying could not create database. The same things happens if I enter a different database name that doesn’t already exist.
What am I doing wrong?
One other quirky thing I noticed is the test database server and view collations FAILS if I enter the password I set for the user I created. If I leave the password blank, it works. Is this related? Also, does it matter that in the browser bar the address I see isn’t just localhost (as it is in the book) but localhost:8888?

In the first place, since this is on your local machine, there’s no problem with just using the default MAMP MySQL login: root - root. Creating specific users for specific databases is of course a necessary security precaution in remote and shared-hosting sites.
In the second place, these names are all case-sensitive. So if you created a database "learningmodx", then that is what you need to use, not "learningMODx".
The "localhost:8888" is because that is the default MAMP port used for the web server. This way it won’t conflict with the default OS X web server (the usual port of 80). You can, however, turn off Web sharing in your machine’s Preferences -> Sharing section, and set MAMP to use the default Apache and MySql ports.
Deleted them, started over, fixed. Should have thought about case sensitivity. Thanks!
