I am trying to install MODx 1.0.2 on a Windows PC with XAMPP, PHP 5, mySQL 5, Firefox on Vista 32, and can get nowhere. I get this when I go to /install/index.php

    ".$_lang["session_problem"]."

    ".$_lang["session_problem_try_again"]."
    "; exit; } $moduleName = "MODx"; $moduleVersion = $modx_branch.’ ’.$modx_version; $moduleRelease = $modx_release_date; $moduleSQLBaseFile = "setup.sql"; $moduleSQLDataFile = "setup.data.sql"; $moduleChunks = array (); // chunks - array : name, description, type - 0:file or 1:content, file or content $moduleTemplates = array (); // templates - array : name, description, type - 0:file or 1:content, file or content $moduleSnippets = array (); // snippets - array : name, description, type - 0:file or 1:content, file or content,properties $modulePlugins = array (); // plugins - array : name, description, type - 0:file or 1:content, file or content,properties, events,guid $moduleModules = array (); // modules - array : name, description, type - 0:file or 1:content, file or content,properties, guid $moduleTemplates = array (); // templates - array : name, description, type - 0:file or 1:content, file or content,properties $moduleTVs = array (); // template variables - array : name, description, type - 0:file or 1:content, file or content,properties $errors= 0; // get post back status $isPostBack = (count($_POST)); $action= isset ($_GET[’action’]) ? trim(strip_tags($_GET[’action’])) : ’language’; // make sure they agree to the license #if (!in_array($action, array (’language’, ’welcome’, ’connection’, ’options’, ’license’, ’mode’, ’summary’))) { # if (!isset ($_POST[’chkagree’])) $action= ’license’; #} ob_start(); include (’header.php’); if (!@include (’action.’ . $action . ’.php’)) { die (’Invalid install action attempted. [action=’ . $action . ’]’); } include (’footer.php’); ob_end_flush(); ?>

which tells me that i have no db connection. That I know, but I can find no documentation explaining how to set up a db connection. Can someone point me to this please?

I had set up 1.0.0 in a system similar to yours. As I recall ...
      - first, get XAMPP installed
      - second, point FF to localhost/phpmyadmin and create a database. Make sure a user (e.g. admin)
has full privileges to the database). Remember the database name, username and password. BTW,
the database gets set up on localhost. (This is a standalone, for-use-on-your-pc, install, right?)
      - unzip MODx to the xampp/htdocs folder. rename it from modx_whatever to something clever, like
      mywebsite
      - point FF to localhost/mywebsite/install. The only option should be install new.
      - when it asks for the database name and user, give the info you got above. Test your connections and
collations as you go along (I recall using SET_NAMES for the collation ...)
      - from there on out it should be straightforward.

      Hope this helps,
      Matt
PS I wrote the above off the top of my head. So I might have goofed something up...

Go back to phpmyadmin, select the database and look under privileges to see who has access to it and what their privileges are.

What are you being prompted for, what are you entering and what is the error being returned by MODx?

Got it. I juggled config information between 127.0.0.1 and ’localhost’ and eventually did something it liked. Thanks very much for your help.

No prob. I just did a new setup and realized that after creating "anewdatabase" I also created a user by that same name, to whom I granted all privileges.

During the MODx install I used this user, setting the server to be localhost. After the connection is tested *then* I set up an admin user, etc. etc. Forgot ’bout that ...
