Java Applets - Get System Info?

I’m not entirely sure where the best place to post this but I’ll do it here...

I would like to some how allow someone to upload their computer spec to their web profile and from what I have read, this cannot be done through JS or PHP. I have read that JAVA applets can do this... Anyway I did do a very limited amount of JAVA when I was studying but it was just the basic print and alert stuff.

I have Googled how it’s done but I don’t seem to be able to find very much about it. Is there anyone here familiar with JAVA applets or know where best to look?

I know that JAVA works in a sandbox mode that requires a user to allow the applet to run... I want to allow the user to have their system spec automatically listed such as CPU, RAM and GPU. It’s for a gaming site and I was asked to see if I can do this. I know that one site called Xfire has this working but they gather the info from an installed program on your computer which then communicates with their website.

If anyone knows or has any useful info that would be great.
