How to control what appears in the front page content?

Hi

Sorry if the solution to my question in the subject has been supplied elsewhere. However I have searched and can’t quite find it. I want to find out how to exercise complete control on what is displayed in the content area of the front page. Such "control" includes: Which artictles are displayed, the order in which they are presented, number of columns when multiple article headlines are displayed.
