I have tried installing a bunch of times and I just can’t get past this point. I’ve tried creating several different databases, but nothing helps. I changed the permissions to 777 and added the blank config file to the includes folder.

I was able to set up another site with no problems. I don’t know what else to do and am ready to move to another cms, since I’ve been fighting this for a couple weeks. Too bad because I like modx on the site that works, but I’m stuck.

I’m on Dreamhost. I’ve created a mySQL database (several times) and have contacted them and they say they can connect to it. Since it also worked for my other site, I don’t think the problem is on their end.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I had the same problem and eventually discovered that the actual name of the database (as I’d named it) was then automatically supplied with a prefix by the hosting control panel setup. For example, if the database name I created was ’firstdatabase’, this was then renamed to ’accountx_firstdatabase’.

Once I entered the full database name with the auto-appended prefix it all went well after that.

I second what duckndive, make sure you’re using the correct database name and username, sometimes the host appends a prefix to the name.

Second, have you tried letting the installer create the database for you?
