I was getting the message "Error: Too many forward attempts" on my website homepage. I had a look in these forums and gathered that the issue might be related to setting the site start page to a document id other than "1". So I changed it back to "1" and it worked fine.
Can anybody explain what the issue might be here? The site start page was set to "982" for the last 2 and a half weeks. I have now set it to "982" again and it works fine.

Could have been a caching problem; if pages were cached with the menus set to the original home page it could have caused problems. Always make sure to clear the cache if you make any changes that might affect menus or other output.
Thanks Susan. The site was working fine for the couple of weeks since the start page was changed, and in this time the cache would have been cleared many times.
The reason for changing the start page is that the site owner is running a campaign and wanted the campaign page to appear when people visit the site. From this campaign site there is a link back to the original Home page (id=1).
Many thanks for your help
I’d recommend clearing your manager log and finding out what’s causing all those event log entries

Also, double-check and make sure the site_start page is published.
Another possibility is that you added the home page to a document group that the user isn’t authorized to visit and have it also set as your unauthorized page in Tools | Configuration.
Every time it’s visited, the user is forwarded to it again - ad infinitum.
