I am looking for a CMS that will allow me to restrict portions of our magazines’ websites (such as full articles and video content) to paying subscribers. Other sections such as the forum and blog are free, but do require logging in to post.
Obviously the CMS will allow people to login to make page changes. However, does modx have any built in registration/user account management for site visitors? I have a very short timetable on this project, so anything modx can do, will save me a lot of coding time.

Yes, web users are for front-end visitors. There are two submenus in the Security menu for managing web users, one for the web user groups they will be assigned to as well as the associated document groups that documents will be assigned to, and one for managing individual web users.
There is also a WebLogin snippet that comes with MODx for handling the actual login and logout, and the WebLoginPE snippet that provides enhanced login and registration features available in the Extras section of the main MODx site.
There are also web user management events available for creating plugins for customized behaviors during login, logout, and creation of new web users.
