Image sizes (template variable)

What is the best way to get an image’s width and height after inserting it into a template variable.

I have 2 thoughts on this:

1) setup 2 more TVs (width input, height input) and manually enter the correct values when using the image TV

or

2) using a snippet to run php getimagesize on the fly when calling the TV value

or is there a better way that I have missed?
