Hi all, we are looking for the right CMS system for our university’s new department site, the only complex thing is the authentication system:

Everyone can register, but admins need to approve them and assign them the appropriate groups. It’s better if they can choose the group they should be in when they register as well (we will have to approve though).

    1. The Student section:
    Front end:
This section has classes with materials for each classes (lectures, videos, .....).We need to assign specific classes to each student, and we need a way to do it effectively. If possible, we would love to set "expiration date" as well, so at the end of the semester students will be automatically removed from these classes.

Also, there are some specific info all students should be able to view such as: event calendar, etc...

Back end: we need to assign professors to classes, they should be able to add, edit content for classes at least. It would be nice if they can assign students to classes as well.

    2. The Staff sections:
This is almost the same with the student section. We will have some pretty important info which we do not wish anyone other than the authenticated persons to be able to view.

Thank you all for reading this and giving your suggestion/advices. We do not mind a bit custom coding to get what we want, but we hope to avoid that as much as possible for now, so we are looking for something that can give us what we need right out of the box.

    Regards

Yest, it is grin MODx is widely used for University sites. There are a few posted in this forum like this one or this one.

In MODx you have user and document groups for both web users and manager users. You can easily create and manage the structure that you want. I am working on a similar project where student and faculty members will have access to their own pages and can effectively have a mini-site where only they (and their assistants) can edit.

Hi all, thank you for your replies. I have looked into the document group and there is one thing im not sure if it can be done:
For example: I will have "Student Section" as one parent document, with many sub documents for classes, and each class has many sub documents for lectures etc
If I set the "Student Section" document to allow "student" group only, then I create new documents under it then I want those document to have the default group set for "student" as well. Right now, it seems like the "public" is always the default.

          Regards

A plug-in is your friend. grin With a plu-in you can pre-set the doc groups for each section. I think that there was a contributed plugin recently that did this but I did not bookmark it (maybe someone else will remember). but it is not too difficult to do custom. Take a look at the plug-ins that inherit templates (inheritParentTemplate is installed by default if you selected it as part of the package during the installation) from parents and you will see the method, just need to adapt for doc groups rather than templates wink
