I am working on a second ModX site and the client would like a forum - is there an easily customizable plugin available or do I need to use a 3rd party software?

if you are running evo 0.9.6.3, you may try SMF since the plugin exists in modx for several years.
right now i’m using the SMF forum outside of Modx, but make a SSI call in front page.
or, if you have time, you can wait the revolution’s forum version released the "discuss", the original modx forum.

AFAIK, there is none.
The forum designer (uhm... i forget who) just remake the SMf’s template to have the similar look to the main site.
Nothing is really connected.
Anyway,
SMF now has 2 branches of development (1.1.x and 2.0.x), which have so much differences in their code base.
