I unzipped modx and uploaded to my server. I actually uploaded it to an addon domain’s folder.

I navigated to that page and I get the installation screen. I choose English for the language. Next I am asked what type of installation. I choose "new installation."

Next, I am brought to the "Database Information: Server connection and login information" screen. It tells me to...

Enter the database host (server name or IP address), the username and password before testing the connection.

Apparently, I need to create a database, user, password on my server. So I do and enter the info here. But the "test connection" fails everytime.

I bet I’m overlooking something simple, but what is it?

It’s an apache server running on Linux with MySql and PHP.

Sometimes the DB name or username you entered when you created the DB and user are not the real ones -- the host adds a prefix.

Also, you may have forgotten to create DB user and given that user rights to that DB.

This is the screen I can’t get past...

I now read somewhere that it is not I who create the DB but modx will if I supply the correct server login info. I am supplying now with my cPanel login info, but I don’t know if I put my main domain or my sub-domain or just the IP address. I tried all 3 and get the same connection error.

          Right. Thanks for your reply.

I have tried both with and without the prefix. But honestly I think I am not correctly identifying the host. It is an addon domain.

Let’s say my real domain is www.xyz.com. Well, I have a subfolder under my public_html folder called abc.com and if you type www.abc.com into your browser, you will go to that folder and that is where I installed modx. So, is my host http://www.xyz.com, http://www.abc.com, http://abc.com...or what? I’ve tried them all.

And, do I create a database or don’t I? Some tutorial or other says modx will.

I will try looking thru the docs again.

Yay, I got past that part.

The answer is "localhost" with my cPanel login.

But now ... it won’t create the database :’(

              woo hoo!

              I got past this, too.

i had to create the database myself, for some reason. And, just like Bob above said, my host adds a prefix to the DB name. In fact, my host prefixes DBs with the user name I selected to use at my host, so, let’s say my username was doobledorser, then my DB name was doobledorser_modx.

I’m glad you got it worked out. Sorry, I should have mentioned ’localhost’.

I should also have pointed you here: http://bobsguides.com/modx-installation-faq.html (I just did a little editing based on your experience). smiley
