I’ve done some searching, but can’t seem to find anything to solve this. What I’m looking to do is use an RSS feed to update a table in the database. This table contains information for about 500+ products. The feed contains about 10-12 datapoints that need to be updated per product. Am I even going about this the right way? Would there be a simpler, more elegant solution to this?
Many thanks.
If RSS or XML isn’t a viable solution to update the database is there a simpler solution? For example, if the client were to upload a csv file to the server that was formatted specifically to be imported into the mysql db would that be a more reliable/doable option? Just looking for thoughts on this, thanks.
If the client already has it in a spreadsheet, go with the csv import option.
It’s easy enough to do, there are a couple of Modx add ons that will help do it.
But if the product info is a remote regularly updated xml file then it’s quite possible to have a snippet that extracts the data and updates the DB running as a cron job. It’s more work initially but then it runs itself.
I’ve done something where I get the European Bank’s daily exchange rates via their xml feed and update my DB once a day.
Yes, they already have it in a spreadsheet. It’s actually a pretty slick set up they have. They’ve got some macros that do specific updates each day and then they’ll be able to post the csv or broadcast an xml feed. Don’t want to ask too much, but how are you updating the db with that bank XML feed? I’m not sure how to best tackle it.
