So I’m completely new to modx, but I like what I’ve been reading about it and how it is easily expanded to fit any sort of requirements.
I am a PHP developer by trade and I’m looking for something to replace my normal development framework to make my clients’ sites easily maintainable for them. So, in order to get my hands dirty with Modx first, I am looking to possibly create a personal-type website as my first dive in to the modx world.
The website will be a relatively straight rating site. The ratings will be categorized by city and state. Here is (generally) how the site will function:
Visitor visits site and registers/logs in
Visitor clicks a state link (IE Alaska, Alabama, Arkansas, etc...)
Visitor is shown a list of the cities in this state for which reviews have been written
Visitor is able to click city names and browse reviews from those cities
Visitor is able to add a new review to the website. On writing their review, they will choose their state and will be able to choose from the cities already existing for that state, or will be able to add a new city.
Visitors review shows up on the website and new visitors are able to see it.
That’s basically it. It’s just a very simple rating website for a specific niche category. So the question is, can Modx do this (Out of the box or with custom development)? How would be the best way to set this up from the manager interface? One document for the entire website and inside that document is a module (Please excuse me if I’m using the wrong terminology here)? Or a document for every state, city, and review. Documents, of course, being created automatically as users submit reviews?
Just looking to find out if this is within the capabilities of Modx, and if so, the best way of going about it.
Any tips or information are greatly appreciated.
Welcome to MODx!

MODx (EVO) fits perfect! But it’s smart of you to try it out first!
There is nice addons. But the built in TVs, Chunks etc. work excellent and are easy to learn and
implement into your xhtml/css code - Not the other way around as with many other cms,
where you have to hack themes.
