I have a website that I’ve been editing using MODX CMS. The site was built and hosted by a 3rd party company. That company has gone out of business and I cannot get a hold of them to download my site so that I can transfer it to another hosting company. The site is still up, fortunately, but I have no idea when it will go down.

I have access to the CMS with administrative role. But I do not have access to the actual server via FTP. Is there a way I can download the entire site from within the CMS? Help is much appreciated!

You can backup the database through the administration screens (Tools/Backup). The other files are available through file manager (Elements/Manage Files). The database.sql file can be used to recreate the site elsewhere. Without FTP or some other command line access your options are limited.

Since you can access the Manager, you could write a module to back up the vital parts (images, custom js files, template files) into one zip file that you can download via the File Manager. Otherwise you’re reduced to downloading individual files. Which is also an option as long as you don’t have a lot of images or other files; you can do a new installation elsewhere and import the database backup .sql file to the new database; you should run the installer again in upgrade mode after to make sure the database is current. Then you would only need to get your custom template css files and images and such.

I’m hosting a few client sites on my server, and I’m always nagging them to download a fresh backup (I’ve installed the bkupMODx module) every few weeks. If I get a bus or a rocket dropped on me I don’t want them stuck.

Thank you for the replies. Unfortunately my knowledge of MODx is limited so I need a bit more direction. I have tried installing the modbak module but unfortunately I don’t seem to be able to upload to the module folder and therefore can’t install it. Any way I can give myself access to that module folder in order to upload to it?

Individual files isn’t an option as I do have a ton of files/images. I’m not sure I understand how the database.sql file works. What exactly does that contain? I can download that via the CMS?

Sorry for the lack of knowledge on this stuff. I’m not the one who built the site so I’m just trying to catch up...

I’m checking something out with the modbak module; perhaps it can easily be installed in the files folder instead; just a minor change in the module configuration should fix it; give me a couple of minutes to test it out.

Ok, I got modbak to run in the assets/files directory. If you prefer that I do it, send me a pm with a temporary manager login and I’ll do it for you.
