    Hello,

Is it possible to use one modx install for a website featuring multiple domain names?

I am building a website for a client who has multiple domain names and would like to use those domain names for the relevant content areas on his site.

I have done a search but can’t seem to find any current postings relating to how this can be done with Modx evolution.

Perhaps the best way to explain this is perhaps with a sitemap:

    + domain1.com.au/index
    - domain1.com.au/pageA
    - domain1.com.au/pageB
    - domain1.com.au/pageC

    + domain2.com.au/index
    - domain2.com.au/pageD
    - domain2.com.au/pageE
    - domain2.com.au/pageF

    + domain3.com.au/index
    - domain3.com.au/pageG
    - domain3.com.au/pageH
    - domain3.com.au/pageI

    + domain1.com.au/about-us

    + domain1.com.au/contact

    + domain1.com.au/sitemap

    Any ideas?

How does this affect seo urls and htaccess etc?

    Thanks in advance.

I believe this is supported in Revolution, but not in Evolution.

With the different contexts, it is possible to manage websites on different domains from one installation.
But like jusmeig said: you’ll need MODx Revolution (although it’s still in development and the betas aren’t fully stable).

But correct me if I’m wrong:
Are you trying to make one website, that uses pages from different domains?
Why?.. What benefits are in that?
If you want the same content on multiple sites, why not just redirect, copy or do something like that?

I think that you sort *could* almost do this in MODx evolution by running YAMS in ’server name’ mode. (See the last few posts of the YAMS forum thread, where someone is setting up their website to do just that.

YAMS is designed for managing multi-language content where each language has the same site structure. With this system Page A, D and G would be managed via different tabs (representing different languages) of a single document. The about us, contact and sitemap pages would be classed as ’monolingual’ documents in this system and would have to be on a separate domain domain4.com.au/...

If don’t know it’s a good idea to use a solution designed for managing multiple languages for managing something else... but you might want to take a look nevertheless.

            Thank you for the replies.

@PMS - YAMS sounds a little complex for me at the moment - not sure if would work easily across different domains rather than sub domains.

@paz - the client wants different domains for seo reasons (to represent the different arms of his business with keyword specific urls in search engines) - not repeated content on multiple sites.

@jusmeig - so perhaps Revolution holds the key.

One issue with trying to use a multilingual site is that things like all sites have only 1 404 page will catch you out. There is an risk that a spider might find the connection, index all the pages and you’ve now created duplicate sites likely you get you banned rather than ranked.

Installing separate installations into folders and using an .htaccess file would be the way to go and it sounds worse than it is, it is pretty easy to dip from one to another. That way you know the installations won’t get linked together unless you cross link.

Of course, you might also consider having them on different servers anyway, because that looks more ’natural’ to Google.

Thanks so much Mark. I appreciate your comments.

Good points re trying one 404 and spidering.

Separate servers / installs it will be.

                Thanks and all the best
